Agree with others. She's really ay the very top of her game in this series, acting her socks off, with the kind of deep-seated intensity that she's brought to her bravura roles. I'm thinking The Others, The Hours, Rabbit Hole, BLL and Destroyer. Even without seeing the last two episodes, I'm confident this series will be one I can return to again and again to enjoy Kidman at her very best in something with real artistic integrity (despite the tough subject matter). As for awards attention, I know it's so early to be talking about that, but I just have a sneaky suspicion this might be one of those rules that's overlooked come awards season. Kidman TV over-saturation? Will they think this role is too similar to some of her others? The sheer strength in depth of leading ladies on TV right now? I hope I'm wrong, of course. Truly, she's never been better, in a performance that could so, so easily go off the rails. Man, she really is amazing in this. Does anyone know how this is doing ratings wise? Is that possible to gauge through Amazon? Completely agreed with your comments, Kidman is always overlooked for her best performances. On paper this role seems similar to previous Bll and undoing. And those critics doing that comparison just revealed how shallow and lazy or biased they are because her character and performance here are very very very different. Shes really firing on all cylinders, I haven't been this excited watching her performance in a long while maybe since second half BLL and destroyer. She's so unpredictable it just reinforces why I'm willing to sink in the Kidmaniac boat because even though we suffer through alot of questionable choices, we get these aces and it makes everything worth it I'm also wondering how's its doing on Amazon.

I really enjoy the drama-that-transpires-in-confined-spaces genre. So this was by far, my favorite episode! I loved everything about it. I felt so uncomfortable when Margaret starts to laugh at the morgue. So unhinged. Exquisite acting. Everyone is doing a great job. Kudos to Lulu Wang - she brought out everyone's best. I don't think this show will find mass appeal tbh. It will probably find its audience and acceptance over time. I just love that laughter scene, it was exquisite.

Thanks for posting this. Interesting comments by both on this podcast. One remark stands out to me, when they discussed why Naomi Watts's career kind of stalled after a few star-making rolls early, while Kidman has cemented her A-list status. This, when the actresses are both exceptionally talented (and friends). Anne Thompson makes a comment that I took to suggest that "somehow" Kidman became the star. I forget the exact wording, but she seemed to infer that it was some inexplicable alchemy that led to Kidman having the bigger career. I've been thinking about this all day. Watts is an exceptional actress, capable of top-tier work. She's particularly well suited to the intimate - scenes that require intelligence and subtlety. I think that's why she's done so well in this role, on Feud, and on TV. It gives her the elbow room to showcase a well-stocked armory of impressive skills. And the small screen is a good vehicle for her, too. Her emotional range is among the best in the business - equally as impressive as Kidman's. But one thing differentiating the two actresses is the sheer magnetism that Kidman has when on screen. I find that Watts can disappear - a quality that can be particularly useful in the right role. But Kidman is such a powerful cinematic presence, so much so it can't be turned off. What is it one critic once wrote about her? She has a sheer "lust for the camera"? I think that's absolutely right, but the lover affair is consummated. I mean, is there any more powerful cinematic image than when Mrs. Coulter smoulders onto screen in that shimmering gold dress? Would Watts have caused such a stir in the same role? There's some kind of innate fire constantly burning away in Kidman that the camera can't help but catch onto, and I don't think Watts has that. And that's why I think their careers diverged - not some weird alchemy, but good old-fashioned move star magnetism. Am I making sense? I'm not sure I am... Agreed watts is am amazing actress, but she lacks in the charisma and magnetism department.

I am really really happy Naomi Watts is getting well earned recognition. She is immensely talented. I would point out, the trajectory for NW's career has been a tad different than NK's. NW didn't find prestige A class status until the 2002-2005 era and by time, NK had given some of the best work, won multiple awards and was well on her way to legendary stardom.
Listen. The longevity of NK's career is a testament to her towering talent. But her film star status and charisma and pop culture iconism also skyrocketted earlier on, because of her association to Tom Cruise. I don't think we can discount that as a contributing factor to her fame and fortune.
I also want to say, pitting actress's talent against each other has been done again and again. I feel like you can not one-up art. They both are beautiful, amazing actresses. Just like several others.
I will say. We follow and stan a real thespian genius.

ive read so many reviews complaining the pace is slow, but im so enjoying the snail pace, i'm soaking in the atmosphere, enjoying the shots and the cinematography. all these inconsequential things we see the characters doing are so fascinating, lulu wang has such a cinematic eye.
and the characters are so rich, who cares about the plot lol. i could lap this up all day.
anybody else think the woman in the lift looked like tilda swinton, this isnt the first time we see her, she also had an odd scene in episode 1. im going to watch the episode again to see what exactly is up with her, shes giving me suspicious vibes.

Really admirable work, doing this project in Asia and allowing so many opportunities to many. Visually stunning and the outdoor scenes are beautifully shot, but what a wasted opportunity. This is easily the second worst show I personally continued watching after 9PS. really disappointed. Sarayu is the only consistent actor with depth and commitment. Nicole is good in few scenes and shockingly bad in many others, like her scene in the supermarket or in the dead guyys apartment?! What was that?!? And her chemistry with Brian Tee is just a joke. I'm glad you guys are enjoying it, sadly I'm not:( but not surprised by the very low ratings by audience.

I think i'm going to watch the show this Friday and waiting just for the last episode.

Oh that's dissapointing to hear paperboy, I feel like Kidman is really nailing being her character as a an entitled demented grieving insufferable woman and balances over the top in her more edgy scenes. That scene in the supermarket was purposefully racist and she really nailed it.
But im glad you watched it and Kidman being divisive means there is nuance.

Episode 5 is hypnotizing. It's a little gem of a movie hidden inside this series. I love the anxious ennui. The sense of languishing leisure amidst of a city so tense. I now wish we had seen even more of these characters in episodes prior.
More thoughts later.

Epiosde 5 just reinforced my suspicions of where lulu was going with the series, it was framed about expatriates in Hong-Kong but it was more about what Hong Kong represented these people.
I now understand why she was so determined to film there, and how did she get a way with filming all of this in Hong Kong is an achievement in itself.
Essie's scenes were very strong in this episode and I loved her sit-down with Margaret later on. I hope she chooses to leave them but Margaret basically emotionally black mailed her.
Then hillary using puri as her doll to play with when she's upset was also quite effective. hillary was drowning in self pit to be genuine in anything, and when puri felt comfortable enough to speak about mercy I knew she would pay for it.
Overall, I'm looking forward to the series finale and so far I haven't been let down by any episode so far each of them have been distinctive and noteworthy.
I'm a big fan of lulu wang, I feel like this show is a reflection of her unresolved feelings of confusion of her ancestral past, present and future. There is this restlessness and I don't think she's discovered an antidote for it
Anyways love the show and ill wait for the finale to rank it in Kidman's mini series list.

EP5 is the best thing since BLL S1 imho!! she and Lulu're the only ones who's really talking about HK's fallen in the whole worldwide industry.
it made me feel so painful yet warm. thank you Nicole and Lulu, girls I see you really care the city and the people and the ongoing history there.
