I am finishing watching the third season of Call My Agent on Netflix and I cannot avoid imagining Kidman in the streets of Paris filming this movie. I hope it comes to fruition next year.

I'm so blessed to be accent-blind, I literally can not tell when an accent is slipping unless it's like absolutely terrible.

This movie sounds great! I hope they make the reporter Australian tho. I really loved Nicole's performance in Strangerland (the movie is a wreck tho) and I think part of the reason was when Nicole gets a juicy part, her accent slips (probably cause she's not focused on technique at those moments); but in strangerland she just used her natural accent and there was never a distracting accent slip when she was running around and screaming/crying. I would love so much to talk about her accent with some of you native English speakers. I'm not able to recognize when her accent is distracting as many people say (I barely can write in English here lol). Reading comments in this last decade it looks like she nailed every accents in her first twenty years (British, Russian in Birthday Girl, American, even a bit African in Interpreter, Swedish in Nine...) and now she did not pay much attention to this anymore. Is it correct? Is one of the reason I'm so excited to hear her Masha in NPS, so I can do a comparison with Birthday Girl (talking to a friend who is Russian, she told me Nicole was so good in that movie, even if she wasn't believable as a Russian native speaker for a real Russian , her works was admirable). Anyway 2021 will be a real challenge for her in terms of accents. A Russian character and a Swedish medieval queen.

I think The Undoing was a mess because it was shot out of order so she had to first put herself mentally in the place where the character was and it's difficult to keep an accent in check while doing that. Similarly, there's some slip-ups in Big Little Lies during the therapy sessions, but you can brush those off because those scenes are astonishing. She has a dedicated accent trainer so she does work on every project. I liked her accent in The Paperboy, even if it wasn't realistic. The Beguiled is passable even if it is inconsistent. I think she struggles with a "realistic" and general American accent (TDF and Moulin Rouge are heightened enough to be flashy) and so her accent work is better in movies that are weirder and less demanding (TKOASD) or where she's pulling from a very specific place (Hemingway and Gellhorn).

Anyway 2021 will be a real challenge for her in terms of accents. A Russian character and a Swedish medieval queen. I find it most prevalent in her "O"s and "A"s, particularly when she's playing "upper class" people. I thought her accent work in The Prom was pretty consistent but it also sounded like a gutsy small town girl who moved to New York, not a rich lady from the Upper West Side. I also think people harp on accents too much: there's no "right" way to do an accent, everybody has idiosyncrasies in the way they talk. But Nicole can def be inconsistent. Personally I think there are more important things than accents when it comes to acting, but it can be distracting (even funny).

it's a little bit out of her league, I've to admit, when we're talking about the accent. I respect Meryl and Leo for their masterful skill at it. Honestly, Cate Blanchett too. She's quite the technician when it comes to accents and it's v impressive.

Woow, so interesting. I would talk about this all day. Do you all think she was better in the past than now? Personally, I find her Virginia Woolf accent magnificent for example. I have compared that to another British character like... I don't know, her Patty in The Railwayman, it sounds she didn't worked so much on that. But I'm not reliable at all.
Anyway, generally speaking, the accent for a character most of the time is not relevant. I don't know why someone complain for that in BLL when we have no idea where Celeste came from. Same with Angie in the Prom. Maybe I can understand all hilarious parodies for the Undoing, since the character was portraited like a New Yorker, but keeping an accent for a six hours limited series must be impossible. Anyway if I think to Birth, another new Yorker woman of the upper east side, it sounds so different to me. I think I will open a topic one day, I'm to intrigued about this lol
I watched all video about that guy on YouTube who analyze all the actors accents hoping to hear him talking about Nicole but nothing... Just a few seconds of her voice work in BLL

I completely endorse Vee's breakdown and description of Kidmans accent slips, in fact I think that is Kidman's main issue with the accent, she takes time to get into the headspace of the character and usually she focuses more on the emotion and sacrifices the accent. So when she has enough time to build the character and remains in character you notice very little of the accent slips, so for example I thought she held her accent well "enough" (not perfect) in films like Destroyer, KOASD, Stoker etc. here Kidman had to go to a specific mood to build her characters. Then you have the undoing and you can tell it wasnt shot in order because her accent is all over the place, but even I was a little shocked at how loose her accent was in the show, its like people were afraid to tell her, lol! but here is the funny thing, her american accent was better in her 90's films, it seems as she got older she lost that technical discipline but her performances did get richer so its an either one with her.

Honestly, Cate Blanchett too. She's quite the technician when it comes to accents and it's v impressive. Indiana Jones 4's Russian accent was very impressive. I saw that in the movie theaters and I can't remember a damn thing about it, not even Blanchett's accent!
