www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/netflix-eyes-movie-adaptation-of-palace-of-the-drownedI didn't know whether to open a new thread for this or not, but I couldn't figure where else to post it. According to this side Netflix is eyeing a film adaptation of Palace of the Drowned with Laura Dern and Nicole Kidman attached to star. The novel's plot goes like this: “It’s 1966 and Frankie Croy retreats to her friend’s vacant palazzo in Venice. Years have passed since the initial success of Frankie’s debut novel and she has spent her career trying to live up to the expectations. Now, after a particularly scathing review of her most recent work, alongside a very public breakdown, she needs to recharge and get re-inspired. Then Gilly appears. A precocious young admirer eager to make friends, Gilly seems determined to insinuate herself into Frankie’s solitary life. But there’s something about the young woman that gives Frankie pause. How much of what Gilly tells her is the truth? As a series of lies and revelations emerge, the lives of these two women will be tragically altered as the catastrophic 1966 flooding of Venice ravages the city. Suspenseful and transporting, Christine Mangan’s Palace of the Drowned brings the mystery of Venice to life while delivering a twisted tale of ambition and human nature.” Dern would play Frankie and Nicole would be Gilly, the villain. Which is a bit weird, because they're the same age jajaja but I guess they'd adapt it. It sounds a bit like a project I'd make up for April Fool's to get my TL's hopes up, or come up with in a fever dream, but who knows.

Deleted my thread, project sounds intriguing and I hope this happens. Filming in Venice would be a dream.
I think perhaps both Laura dern and Nicole are attached to the same role. Let's see how this pans out.

LOL but I'm so exciting about the film!!

So guys I had read Palace of the Drowned last year. It was a good read. Liked it a little bit less than Tangerine.
There's only one role in the book for an older actress like Kidman or Dern. The other role is someone like the ages of Emma Stone or Amanda Seyfried etc. The 'young girl' pretends to be a friend/acquaintance's daughter. It can't be Kidman AND Dern. It's likely Kidman OR Dern.
The protagonist/role of older author, is British. I don't see Dern fitting that role at all.
Having said that, could it be a Blossom production/Kidman producing with Dern acting? Who knows.
Would be interesting.

Oh my gosh! Let this happen. I love everything about this project.
So, reading the article, they will change the age of the characters for Laura and Nic.
Do you guys think this is the project Nicole was talking about months ago that she was going to shoot with Laura Dern? I remember it was actually a series, but who knows.

I think this is it, and yes, we (Laura included, she said "a project", not that sure) thought it'd be a series. my guess is, Netflix' The Lost Daughter success and our girl's Lucy hit at Amazon, changed their mind. the adaptation must be very long and complicated, as Wiz said, originally there's no room for both ladies. but I presume now, 6 month later(which is exactly one draft long), the apapt is done, so they announced. PS. sugar-daddy-flix better land us Paolo Soriano or Alfonso Cuarón.

In my mind Luca Guadagnino is the perfect name for this project. Obviously he have plenty of projects in development yet.
So I dunno why but I think will be a female director, and not Italian.
If they want a female Italian director I can suggest Alice Rohrwacher...

I think it was Dern mentioned the project in her interview in some show, like with one of the Jimmys. she said that she and Kidman are gonna reunion with a project, and that's it, no more further info.

Luca is very good at digging complicated relationships. good choice!! but I wanna see Paolo to really combine the story with Venezia, like he did Roma in La Grande Bellezza. anyway, I really hope that it'll be helmed by an Italian director.
