“Lion” lenser Greig Fraser walked away with top honors in the feature film category at the 31st annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards Saturday night. Fraser also won the Golden Frog at last year’s Camerimage cinematography festival.

hey that is great for Greg Fraser, he has a good shot at that academy award. the cinematography in LIon does come off as understated in comparison to the other nominees but its subtle and elegantly crafted.

Lion remains the number one film at the Australian box office for the third weekend in a row. after collecting $3.05 million.

The first time this has happened since Crocodile Dundee in 1986

It has now taken a massive $16.3 million and is well on its way to being the fifth highest grossing Australian film of all time.

Lion is also close to outgrossing Carol, which had Blanchett, Mara and Haynes on its side.

UK Boxoffice update

Lion actually went up to number 5 and fell a repectable 20% from last weekend, whilst its not doing as much as Australia, the UK market is heavily competitive with a huge number films all being released at the same time. So Lion holding on indicates word of mouth is strong.

Lion continued its healthy UK run by dropping only 21% as it travelled to a $1.09m (£870,870) third weekend as it rose to fifth.

Entertainment’s Best Picture nominee is now up to $6.23m (£5m) after adding more than $1m (£800,000) across its second Mon-Thurs session, despite the competition from other awards contenders.

I expect great figures from Australia's final gross. It is surely outgrossing "Australia" and any Kidman movie there. Also, regarding UK box office, I have heard a lot of colleagues talking about this new movie "Lion" that you need to watch, so word of mouth is working here quite well too.

Also, Kidman just snagged another nomination. This time from the ICS Award Nominees (International Cinephile Society), a very picky group. You will understand when you see all the nominees.

Looks like the Superbowl did have an impact on Lion US weekend actuals are off by almost 10% Lion is at number 10 with 3.7 million.

Oscars 2017 Cinematography: ‘La La Land’ Has Momentum, But Could There Be An Upset?

With the ASC Awards on Saturday, all eyes are on the cinematography race. Will "La La Land" prevail or be upset by "Arrival," "Lion," or "Moonlight"?

“Trying to capture the essence of India is almost like trying to bottle magic, which is hard to do because India is so broad and diverse — it’s controlled chaos,” Fraser told IndieWire. “But there’s spirituality and wholeness to the people. India was Saroo’s home and we couldn’t show it as a desperate, glum, poor place. India needed to be beautiful and radiating love.”



Therefore, Fraser relied on the organic look of the two countries: “India has a natural brownness to it, a natural yellowness, a sepia tone to it, with the dust in the air. And Australia has a blueness and a greenness to it. We felt like we didn’t need to push those tones more than they appear naturally,” said Fraser, who divided the movie into four movements, emphasizing empowerment and loss of control.
