Honestly, all 'FIVE" performances are incredible, Even when I adore Moulin Rouge and is My Nicole Kidman's ultimate movie, I recognize the powerful and breathtaking performances in this top five. I will be happy with any order this movies will rank, but my guess is: 5- Dogville, 4- Moulin Rouge, 3- The Hours, 2- To Die For and 1- Birth on the number one spot.

I didn't realise Birth was SO popular. I mean, it's one of her very best. But THE best? Is it people's favourite just because of the opera scene?
I'm sure I'm going to get hate for this, but I've always thought Kate Winslet gave the best performance in that year with "Eternal Sunshine".

I'm not gonna say zip about the remaining five placements, but I feel like perhaps "To die for" the user should reveal the top 5 in his video?
so question to you guys, what would you prefer, \
A) I continue the snail pace reveals of the top 5 with random commentary and those pic collages. with TDF clip released at the end.
or
B) band aid pull and reveal of the top 5 with TDF's clip who worked very hard formulating and editing it.

Birth performance to me was like a hidden treasure, the opera scene was just out of this world, but its way beyond that. Every single scene she was in was just perfection. I think she crossed the line in that film. She lived and breathed the character... I always recall the scene she is having lunch with her mom, its very short, bit simply brilliant and effective. Birth to me was and always be my first pick. Part of me doesn't want her to top that performance.

The opera scene in Birth is amazing, in part cause it brings to the fore what the film is: a tragedy that portrays the slow emotional and psychological deterioration of Anna. All the scenes of the film work together beautifully to portray her slow deterioration. The scene in the hall when Sean collapses, the scene in the park when they are driving in the carriage, and the incredible final scene at the beach when Kidman is in the water. In this scene you see into Anna's soul and see the suffering and pain. Kidman's portrayal is disturbing, pitiful and haunting throughout.

I know we three are hard-core fans of "The Hours" and all voted for it as number 1 hahaha Yeah I doubt it will ever not be my #1. It's such a special performance and movie- although Streep and Moore grate on me in it! And what is more impressive to me is that I think on paper Nicole was such strange casting (Miranda Richardson would have actually made more sense!). But because of Nicole's turmoil with Cruise, she was able to go to such a dark place and it was devastating to watch! Birth, while I love it, is kind of let down by the film (specifically the ending) and by the boy actor. And even though we go through Anna's journey with her, I don't feel like we ever really glimpse who Anna is as a person (unlike, say Margot or Susannah). Which is probably more the fault of the script than anything else. So I'm hoping To Die For tops it, if The Hours doesn't.

I read Birth as a surrealist inspired film, that operates with an internal logic. If read through its use of symbols and structure, the film's rather illogical story gains meaning, and the ending as a coda makes sense.
I don't think the film is interested in Anna's past and future, or in any linear narrative development, but rather in unfolding her emotional and psychological present state in order to reveal her pain and suffering.
