I read Birth as a surrealist inspired film, that operates with an internal logic. If read through its use of symbols and structure, the film's rather illogical story gains meaning, and the ending as a coda makes sense. I don't think the film is interested in Anna's past and future, or in any linear narrative development, but rather in unfolding her emotional and psychological present state in order to reveal her pain and suffering. Beautifully said.

Birth is a masterpiece. Simple as that. So many powerful scenes, not just the 'opera' scene. There are many. The character Anna, Kidman's look, the cinematography just astonishing. If we're talking scenes, the beach scene at the end is heartbreaking. It certainly stays with me.

I prefer Crawford's beach scene if I'm honest. Nicole wins the battle of the close-up, though!

Joan being my favourite classic actress, Nicole being my favourite contemporary actress, and both my favourite performances of theirs have those beach scenes. I honestly couldn't choose, both are sublime, powerful and so touching!

I edited this, coincidentally my favourite performances by both my favourite classic actress and contemporary actress have powerful beach scenes. Crawford in “Humoresque” and Kidman in “Birth”. ♥️🏝🎬♥️ I used to be better at edit, but since i got rid of my tablet, and rarely go on my laptop i did this on my iPhone, took 20 seconds LOL!

I think “Birth” is the most beautiful and heartbreaking movie about love ever made.
Nobody in Hollywood would jump in such a difficult movie like this one. Nicole did, and at the stage of her career where she had all the majors in Hollywood at her feets. What amazing actress and person she is...maybe she got what the movie was really about at the first read of the script.

OK guys we decided that I reveal number five today and To Die For will launch the video tomorrow with the top 4 to officially conclude the Board's collective top 20 Nicole Kidman performances, Drum roll, 05. Grace Margaret Mulligan, Dogville (2003)
selected by 100% of the Boards users is Kidman's performance as Grace in DOgville, a performance whereby Kidman instills a quiet suffering to Grace one that you feel and dread, but yet there is an innocence, naivete and hope in her character every step of the way. You feel her happiness in Grace's stolen moments of freedom, her pride in her achievements, her mercy and forgiveness, Kidman's performance is literally biblical! And then the finale which under any other actress perhaps wouldn't have worked as well but the divine retribution of wrath Kidman's character unleashes on the town's folk brought a cathartic resolution to an epic tale. To date, I have not experienced anything like it in any other film. It was disturbing but a requisite to the wonder and magnificence of the performance! SO bravo to the performance and bravo to Dogville. Also I'm glad she didn't do the the sequels. Attachments:

I can't say enough good things about Dogville. But what I will say today is, this movie has never been more relevant. Or more of a reflection of USA's treatment of refugees and immigrants. Remember how Grace's selfless service to the town becomes too much for the townsfolk, who turn critical and crabby? She had to deal with the prejudice of residents who realise the place has become too dependent on her sheer goodness. And they start to take advantage of her; eventually shackled her.
Quite the commentary.

My only niggly complaint with her performance is the whispering. Other than that, it's a tour de force!

I once tried to introduce this to someone, but they clearly didn't watch it. They knew what a big Kidman fan i am and her being my favourite, the best they could come up with from me loving her is ''Stepford Wives''.

This is it. We have come down to the FINAL RANKINGS. First of all, I would like to thank Mr-Dedlock for organizing the event and computing and revealing the list over the last two months. Also, I would like to thank each and everyone of you for participating and engaging not just in this vote, but for following and keeping our board active and strong for the past two and a half years. This is without a doubt, my favorite forum on the planet!
We, Kidmaniacs, probably all know the top four list. The real question is which one will be crowned the NUMBER ONE BEST Performance of Nicole Kidman. Will it be "To Die For" (1995), the movie that brought out Nicole Kidman's incredible acting to the public? Will it be "The Hours" (2002), the movie that won her the highly coveted Oscars? Will it be "Birth" (2004), the hidden gem that is now being re-evaluated and recognized by modern critics and audience? Or will it be "Moulin Rouge!" (2001), the movie that shot Nicole to stardom as one of the most famous Hollywood stars?
After over 25 hours working on this video, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the full list of the top 20 performances, voted by none other than members of Kidmaniacs board:
