It hit me reading the other thread when thoughts moved to her next project and which female director will she work with next,
Kidman is determined to keep working with female directors to bring positive change to the industry which is admirable, but is she doing it at the expense of the quality of her work and performances?
I thought we could discuss this now that we have a little more to go through, not much but a little better than before
1) The Undoing (2020) Susanne Bier 2) Big Little lies (2019) Andrea Arnold 3) Destroyer (2018) Karyn Kusama 4) Top of the Lake (2017) Jane Campion 5) The Beguiled (2017) Sofia Coppola 6) Strangerland (2015) Kim Farrant 7) Bewitched (2005) Nora Ephron 8) The Peacemaker (1997 ) Mimi Leder 9) The Portrait of a Lady (1996) Jane Campion 10) Bop Girl Music Video (1983) Gillian Armstrong
we all know when a director manages to capture Kidman's special screen presence, quality and performance.
For me in general apart from Karyn Kusama, who did an admirable job capturing and bringing out Kidman's best performance in years in a patchy film, the rest all either dont understand what makes Kidman spark, fail to bring out the best in Kidman, or buckle under pressure and lose it.
I know its not fair since we don't have much to work with and the industry has worked against female directors from the start, but even the more experienced ones such as Jane Campion and Andrea Arnold didn't deliver for met at least. Well maybe campion managed to do alot with Kidman in TOTLS02 but I hated her performance in portrait of a lady so its a mixed bag.
so what do we think as fans, and please dont take this the wrong way< I'm all for giving female directors more opportunity but I thought it would be fun to see what the rest of us have to say and since Kidman is determined to keep at it, can we expect the output to keep getting better or worse?

For me, seeing Nicole working with Sofia Coppola, one of my favorite directors, was a dream. I think she was able to capture Nicole's charm in an ethereal way. I'm not a fan of Jane Campion either even though Nicole's performances in Portrait of a Lady and Totl were really good. I found Kusama's direction raw and still looking for a personal style, even if Nicole was fenomenal. I dreamed of Nicole directed by Andrea Arnold but we know how she went. With Kim Farrant she offered her wildest performance of her in years, but like Kusama, the direction was raw. I don't take the others into consideration, no one impress me so much. So if I had to say what my favorite combination is, I'd go to Kidman-Coppola.
For the future I wish a collaboration with Céline Sciamma, I'm a huge fan of Portrait of a Lady on Fire, what a masterpiece. Second, I choose Claire Denis, her latest, Hig Life, was an incredible movie. Then I really want Nicole to work with some new talent like Rose Glass (Saint Maud) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), the two greatest director of 2020, in my opinion.

Love Your choices and thoughts. Portrait of a Lady broke me. Loved that movie. So nuanced, full of hidden meaning, incredible direction. So definitely up for Sciamma collaboration. Fennell and Glass also. I would also add Natalie Erika James (Relic) and Shannon Murphy (Babyteeth) I loved their 2020 work. I would also add Tamara Jenkins, Rebecca Miller, Jill Solloway (pure love for Transparent) Sarah Polley, Cate Shortland, Lynne Ramsay, Joanna Hogg, Claire Denis:) Malgoska Szumowska, Jasmina Zbanic.

I saw the list and was surprised there are two Nicole films! He seemed a bit cold with her at the Bafta's red carpet, so I wasn't expecting that. Maybe it was the Adams snub. Out of all the names you guys brought up, Sciamma and Ramsay would be my biggest dreams. They have really different styles and I think would be able to tap into different sides of Nicole's range. Dark and light, twisted psychological and more naturalistic.

Unpopular opinion. Obviously a woman can be amazing in directing as a man, but I don't see anyone working in Hollywood that I appreciate very much. So, this deal Nicole made, to work with a female director everytime she can, didn t make me excited so much, even she is one of the few people who really trying to do something about it and that's amazing.
If I have to say a few names I would like to watch her directed by Lynne Ramsay, Katherine Bigelow, or another Coppola movie (I think she is really the one who know how to treat her perfectly). Personally, i would not be upset to a reunion with Kim Farrant, i loved Strangerland so much.
I agree with who said : no Greta Gerwig.
Edit: I would die if she would be in a series, or a movie, directed by Phoebe Waller Bridge. Lol

You guys have practically mentioned all the fantastic choices that I could think of. These past couple of years, I loved First Cow (Kelly Reichardt), Hustlers (Lorene Scafaria) and Can You Ever Forgive Me (Marielle Keller).

Than Amy Schumer backed out of Barbie Movie to make She came to me with Miller but still nothing happened. Nicole was still available through this period of time. This will probably come back in two or three years like many projects did but probably with different cast. I loved Miller's Maggie's Plan. Loved the script. So funny and witty.

I looked up the interview: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnmIe6qAYAs&ab_channel=HeyUGuysAnd to be fair, watching now, I think I exaggerated. Back when I first saw it, I sensed he didn't really like when she says "it's just the way things go, sometimes" and it wasn't until she continues with "it doesn't take away from the strength of that performance, because that performance the whole film rotates around it" that he changed his attitude and praised her work in Lion (even as he had previously said he liked the film). Like I said, he was quite pissed about Adams' snub (as was I) but the entire interaction played a bit like her approching him to tell him she loved his work and him just being polite and a bit non-committal. That being said, she always does this where she crashes interviews at red carpets and two seconds in she's like so shy and awkward it always makes me laugh. And I do think that he must like her in some way, because the two films he lists have her as a lead, one of them released shortly after that interview. I'd love for them to work together, she should work her JMV connection.

The Undoing is the finest work, followed by BLL 2 (if you could even call that her project). Pretty disappointed with most other titles, mostly with The Beguiled since Sofia is one of my favourite directors. I wish Kidman did something contemporary with her, like a female version of LIT or The Little Mermaid, because Sofia cannot direct period pieces. Even Kidman's accent was a mess. Thank God for The Undoing. Just heard some people at the gym praising it many weeks later.
