Thought I'd create a dedicated thread to this divisive but noteworthy entry to Kidmans filmography and menagerie of performances Guy Lodge has written a lovely piece on defendimg the paperboy's legacy chronicling its Cannes debut and subsequent notoriety. Its a good read link

It is among my Nicole Kidman's top 5. What a tremendous and jaw-dropping performance!

"most of all, an extraordinary, brazenly against-type Kidman – commit dementedly to the cause"
A very worthy addition to her beautiful filmography. More like this, please.

I think the film is perfectly filmed trash that is amplified by bombastically camp yet heartfelt performances (particularly Kidman/ Gray) , we need more Paperboys, that is why I'm glad articles like this exist in 2021.

I am obsessed with this movie. Would I say I love it? Probably not, but I do really appreciate it for what it is. It feels to me as if what Tarantino movies are for other people (but I never really was fond of his work). It's so gaudy and self indulgent that you don't even have to follow the plot, just the vibes.

Absolutely incredible performance from Nicole! Mesmerising. Great year for her. I still rank this performance very high in her filmography,
I do love how it’s known by “Despite some mixed reviews, Kidman’s performance was praised and drew Golden Globe and SAG nominations”.
This is her movie. It’s still not a general public appealing type of film. But I do love how it managed some acclaim. It was never going to be a box office hit.
Almost 10 years!

Also it is a good article, but sometimes those types of articles that immediately state “this isn’t a bad movie, why this isn’t a bad movie or whatever” don’t really do justice to the film they are trying to defend. There’s bad movies, literally panned, flops, no award nominations or praise or mixed reviews and then there’s those movies that are just mixed movies. So to some who aren’t aware of “The Paperboy” might get the impression it’s a Madonna movie case, Showgirls or Cats!
Sorry just a peeve of mine. Like those people who throw around underrated.
Articles, gaining more interest for some films are better to attract potential interest with more than “Why it’s not a bad movie”. I’d have gone for a headline “Why The Paperboy is one of Nicole Kidman’s finest performances” if it’s from a fan and really highlight in the article yes the mixed reviews and box office bombing (but be sure to note some box office bombs are smaller films and weren’t expected to be marvel hits!) but also really throw in Golden Globe nomination and SAG.
Some people’s attention spans are short anyway so they might see bad movie and think oh bad movie and also I feel even people with good intentions can be hyperbolic.
Example the other day with these fan justice campaigns getting “older” albums to number on on i-tunes, (some did deserve more) but some were literally number one or if they weren’t big commercial hits, some were Grammy nominated. Do some see where I’m coming from or am I on another planet? 😆

The film itself was not amazing, but what Nicole delivered MORE than deserved an Oscar. Still enrages me how many times Nicole has been shut out of the Oscar conversation.
Glad it, and her role especially in it is getting attention.

To me The paperboy failed in so many areas, form the editing to story telling, just a mess, it was a huge disappointment "film quality wise" I remember after I finished the book, I thought it was going to be brilliant, but all my dreams were crushed lol But then Kidman gave us some of her most daring work, a brilliantly raw performance, layered with complexity and dark sides of a completely visioned character, she lived and breathed Charlotte Bless, I fell in love with that character and she proved again and again that she shines in films way beneath her level. A performance we were all hungry for, specially after rabbit Hole. She was the only reason I kept watching, and I remember thinking I'm just going to watch it in the cinema because it's Nicole, but I was blown away by how powerful she was. It's unfortunate cause I really wanted people to watch this, her work there is like a hidden treasure, a lot of people wouldn't even know about it ... It's a very special for to me though, I created it's facebook page back in 2012 and managed to get over 30k followers and received a poster signed by nicole herself 🤣
I have to rewatch it soon ❤️
