I always liked this movie. I think it's layered, atmospheric and beautifully shot and acted. Like a theatre play of sorts, an episodic one where the lead character meets all these other characters and learns about himself.
My only issue is - it kinda doesn't come to any big conclusions; just kinda ends. But I still have it in my top ten Kidman flicks, and I think I always will.
I particularly like Kidman's bedroom soliloquy. It's magnetic. And she's rarely looked better.
I'm happy this look of hers was replicated in Deer later.
What about you guys?

Thanks for this post!! I started to be a Kidmaniacs with Eyes Wide Shut... so, you can imagine... for me it's one of my favourite Nic performance (and that's a lot to say) and it's an incredible movie.... In fact, what you say about it doesn't come to a big conclusion, is one of the best part of this movie... and every time I see it, I find something different, and it's been years and years, so for me it's a masterpiece.
I think in Kubrick world there's 2 types of people, the ones that find that EWS is one of the best conclusions of a master at his craft, and then the others that find the movie a small deception in his filmography. I'm definitely on the first group.
And yes, I was so happy with her look (and also caracther) being replicated in DEER.

The movie's like a dream, and it's quite rewatchable. I must have seen it 6 or 7 times at least and, like you said, you get sth new out of it each time.

OK, let me oepen it a bit. this film is the only one that Kidman and Blanchett worked together right? Wasn't Blanchett's only a cameo in this? I wouldn't call it working together. Hopefully, one day, they'll have a scene together. Although, for me, they both have such a strong screen presence, I feel like the camera lens would break if they put them together lol.

I revere Eyes Wide Shut. The dreamy score and absurd dialogues, the Christmas lights, the depiction of New York City, the sexual tension, the angst, it always fast tracks me into a trance-like state and detaches me from the real world and mundane concerns. I have watched it - either fragments or the entire movie - almost every year, around Christmas time.

They were so ugly and disquieting lol

Everytime I watch eyes wide shut I keep seeing a different movie, I've come to many conclusions from taking it at face value, or the dreamscape allegory, tangible evidence of conspiracy theories or that the film is one huge practical joke.
I've just come to the conclusion that it is a sage art at its highest caliber.
