I am new to proboards forums so I am not sure if somebody is already making a folder to house this sort of thing, but I thought having a folder with a thread for all of Nic's past movies could be a good idea. Then we could discuss and comment on them each I don't know how to make a folder outside of the General one so I am making this post here for the time being. I hope it's okay I just watched Dead Calm for the first time over the weekend. Despite it being her biggest early Australian success, and me being Australian myself, I had never come across it before! And all I can say is .. WOW! Nicole's performance in the film was extraordinary. Especially since she was only about 19 years old I think and had to play a much older woman, so it was believable she had a child and was married to Sam Neill. Sam Neill and Billy Zane were also terrific in the movie but Nicole really stole the show with her acting. Particularly good were the 'action' sequences, with her fight scenes with Billy and her fake seduction of him. I love watching Nicole's earlier work to see how, even then, at that early stage of her career, how fantastically effective her facial expressions and emotions are. She plays them so well and I love seeing how she has extended these skills right up to the present. I felt everything along with her, as each emotion and expression crossed her face. It was so real. Definitely in my Top 10 performances! Anyone else agree?

Completely agree, she is a force to be reckoned with in that film. i would also urge you to check out her two Australian made TV series from the 80's Vietnam and Bangkok HIlton both very naturalistic and strong performances. There is a rawness in her earlier performances that she lost when she went into the Hollywood machine, however, when she does find it her performances end up being something special.
As for the Boards, for the time being since it's small we'll leave it this way, however, if it does get bigger we'll set up differnt folders for her past filmography.

Just watched "Dead Calm" for the first time. And wow oh wow, I was completely won over. A terrific thriller with excellent direction and cast. The performances and chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane were insane. What a great way to announce herself to Hollywood! An excellent 9/10.

Billy Zane and Kidman's chemistry was something else in this film, it's too bad his career seemed to have declined very quickly post titanic. He's a good actor under a very disciplined director.

It is indeed an excellent thriller.
To think Nicole was only 20 when they shot the film. She displays such maturity on screen.

just saw that movie for the first time, it's very fine feminist thriller! Nicole nailed it, i didn't quite expect to see such a strong performance in her earlier roles, the movie itself succeeds and is very effective as a thriller, billy zane looked so hot

I watched again this weekend, after many years since the last time I saw it, and I liked it even more! The cinematography it's incredible, such wonderful scenes and shots; the soundtrack is amazing. A real 80's trhiller. The begining is sou haunting, the pace and music, and the car scene with the baby wow. Nicole is amazing, perfection. This should be more talked about and discussed lol I really hope I can see it in a theater one day!
