Saw the film today, just arrived home. I'm still trembling, in shock, I'm all over the place to be honest. Didn't feel like this in quite a while after a film. I'm so, so proud of Nicole for doing this film, at this point I don't care if she gets any nominations, nothing will change what I feel about Destroyer and Nicole's performance. It is for sure at my top 3. I don't think I remember such a chameleonic transformation from Nicole since The Hours. I will have to watch the film once again, and try to process everything.
By the way, in the end many people applaud. Overall the reaction of the public couldn't have been better.

I didn’t find make up distracting at all, great job. soundtrack powerfully understated, I like it very much. i don’t think it is too far, I know the academy is sometimes too conservative, but I don’t think they can overlook this performance. It would be outrageous, really. I’m trying really hard to find a performance this raw, deep and disturbing and I can’t.

I saw the movie yesterday at the Mill Valley Film Festival, and I have to say the film is more of a character study, and definitely leaves the audience to think and connect her story to make sense of how Bell turns out to be the way she is now. A handful of people who left the theater was confused by the ending. This could have been helped had the editing been different. The camerawork was also distracting in its inconsistency.
But the performance of Kidman lingers. The more I think about it, the more I am amazed. She gives subtle details (in her walk and in her voice) that is important in the character's progression/regression in her later life. I think this is the hardest character she's played, and she made me believe that the two Erins, the young and the current, are the same person, but destroyed over the years by her choices, and by her conscience. There is nothing like it in her filmography, and I can't think of many characters in any movie that has gone through such a transformation, both physical and mental. The closest character I can think of is the main character from the Machinist, but even that's not enough.

A film that’s haunting, atmospheric, and hard to shake once the credits have rolled. It might sound rote to say that Kidman vanishes into the role of Erin, but she does. In fact, she’s consumed by her. Only when we get flashbacks to the events which have transformed Erin into this neglected shape do we get a reminder of the superstar beneath. At times she’s contemptible, especially in pursuit of the next breadcrumb, but you soon begin to realise that this dark angel is ghosting through an LA occupied by even worse spectres than her. It’s not showy in a prosthetic nose Academy baiting way, it’s a performance necessary in telling this dark tale of corruption and redemption, and Kidman, all brittle and bruised, like a failed rock star shuffling towards ignominy, is phenomenal at doing just that.

That would be Nicole Kidman and you have no idea just how happy I am to FINALLY see her be good again in a good movie! In fact, not just good, sensational. In the present-day scenes, especially, Kidman is borderline unrecognisable, an emaciated, pale ghost of a human being, a glance at whom can instantly tell you that this is somebody who has been hurting deep down for decades and refused to take the steps required to fix that. When she stares at people in anger, which happens a lot, the potency of those stares could melt steel beams, they broadcast hate-waves directly to the very core of one’s soul. When she flies off the handle and violently attacks people, which happens a lot, she’s genuinely scary not because she’s capable – as is befitting a gritty noir flick, this is not a movie where anonymous asshats on YouTube comments are going to complain about a frail woman unrealistically beating the shit out of men twice her size because of a secret feminist agenda on the part of the filmmakers – but because they are the desperate lashings of a woman who has given up on herself so completely that it’s like she wants somebody to murder her. If there was a soul in Erin, it’s long gone, and that’s what makes Kidman’s dramatic turn (both physically and emotionally) work so well: it’s not soulless, but there’s absence of the soul where even she doesn’t know how to make it come back.
