Hong Chau would be amazing. I Loved her in Downsizing. I think should be someone who also speck chinese. Don’t think Luci Liu or Sandra Oh have this skill

Is one of the characters Asian? I also thought of the stunning Ziyi Zhang - her, Li or Oh would be lovely <3 From reading the synopsis it sounds like atleast three or four of the main characters are east Asian in origin.

In the book Mercy is Korean and grew up in America, and she is a young adult in her 20s. Margaret is one eighth Korean, and is a mother. I don't think they mention her age but she has young children. Hilary is caucasian, and in the book is in her late 30s I believe.
I kind of assumed based on this that Nicole would play Hilary, and she would just be older. But if they're changing so much from the book, maybe they will change more aspects of the characters.
The only one in the new description that mentions their race specifically is Olivia, being Chinese.

I am very keen to know the cast and director now. The first of the three main characters is Margaret Reade. She is portrayed as poised, thoughtful and beautiful but also profoundly sad and grieving. (I thought this was an obvious 'Kidman role'. But it also gave me a very Rabbit Hole/Strangerland vibe and I hoped she'd choose another role). Mercy Cho is a Korean-American from New York who is 28 but is shockingly immature and seems to forever be on the verge of jumping into adulthood, but remains reluctant to do so. (This was my favorite character. I guess Sandra Oh is a tad bit too old for the role and thought Jenna Ushkowitz or Grace Park might be a good choice here) The third character is Hilary Star, a 38 year old whose marriage is in trouble, which is in part due to the couple's inability to have a baby and is secretly toying with the idea of adoption. (I had hope Nicole would pick this up because she hadn't played a woman struggling with infertility yet. On the other hand, she's also 50 and this is again a younger character. Since it's British, I thought about Keira Knightley or Felicity Jones. Mulligan or Clare Foy, as well may be?) In terms of the other characters: Tammy, a high-flying alpha-expat who is blindsided when her husband’s Chinese second family appears on her doorstep (I don't know know why I'm thinking Brooke Shields. Or Amanda Peet) Barbara, whose decadent lifestyle belies a ticking clock (Tracee Ellis Ross or Maya Rudolph, may be?) Franny, an Australian expat loyal to anyone she’s having lunch with, who faces an existential crisis (Too small a role for Rose Byrne?) Olivia, a Chinese local socialite who experiences a humiliating loss of status. (Olivia Munn please?)

And personally I think the casting controversy was a bit weak. Nobody bats an eyelid when an American or Aussie plays a European or English person, so why would it be such a crime for a Chinese actress to play Asian? I think Zhang was even better in "The Road Home" and "2046", and then of course there's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "House of Flying Daggers" and "The Grandmaster". Seeing her in these nothing guest roles lately is such a massive waste of her incredible talents.

Agreed, I never really thought about it until seeing the backlash - it seemed anyway that a lot of Japanese didn't actually care, it was everyone else that had a problem with it. I see Zhang is in the new Godzilla movie (which I thought looks a bit meh :/ And Millie Bobby Brown put me right off it from the get-go lol), so hopefully she'll start appearing in more again, maybe even in the Expatriates!

I would love for Zhang Ziyi or Maggie Cheung to be cast in this as well. The British expat role screams Naomi Watts despite the age difference. Regardless, it’s an exciting prospect and a chance to bring a diverse cast front and center.

I just finished reading the book. I really enjoyed it. By the end, it kind of comes off as a bit similar to Big Little Lies to be honest. It deals with different issues in the storylines of these women, but how it all comes together in the end is kind of similar. But then again, BLL is one of my favourite Nicole projects so that's not a bad thing, in my opinion. The character of Olivia is in the book too by the way, but she doesn't really have much of a storyline and is just a friend of Hilary's.

And especially, too, in line with Sandra Oh's recent historic Emmy nomination, this is such an important project for Nicole to be making right now. Casting women of different races and backgrounds. It will be big.

It will be big. Exactly this. What Nicole has achieved with Big Little Lies and other recent projects has been incredible. Nicole has been talking a lot about creating opportunities and roles for actresses. But so far, we've only seen mostly white actresses benefit from this. Nicole is too mutli-faceted to be labled with the dreaded "white feminist" label . A project like The Expatriates is intersectional. It's mean so much to different groups of women. I feel like that must have been at the back of her mind when she decided to go for this book specifically. I'd say it's incredibly smart for Nicole to get this project off the ground. She's walking the walk for women of all background and races.

It will be big. Hopefully it doesn't end up being Lucy Liu and Sandra Oh. I love both of those actresses, but they as American as apple pie. Zhang, Cheung, Li or even Yeoh would be much more inspired casting.
