Given that Nicole is an avid reader, and so many of her projects are based on books, I thought it would be fun to have a 'book club' thread dedicated to discussing the books that Nicole movies/TV shows have been made from, or ones she had once mentioned she'd make, but have not yet come to fruition.
Here's the books I've read that have been made into films/TV:
- Michael Cunningham, 'The Hours' (LOVED)
- Pete Dexter, 'The Paperboy' (An alright read, but boy did Nicole bring the story to life!)
- S.J. Watson, 'Before I Go To Sleep' (A good read)
- Kevin Wilson, 'The Family Fang' (LOVED)
- Liane Moriarty, 'Big Little Lies' (LOVED)
Books I've read that Nicole has said she plans to adapt/is yet to adapt:
- John Prestion, 'The Dig' (Decent read, but not sure how riveting this would be as a film)
- A.S.A. Harrison, 'The Silent Wife' (Was good, but really petered out and ran out of steam as it went on)
- Liane Moriarty, 'Nine Perfect Strangers' (Really enjoyed! But could easily cull a character or two to streamline the storyline)
- Kimberly McCreight, 'Reconstructing Amelia' (A good read - I was looking forward to Nicole producing and Naomi Watts starring, but nothing ever seemed to come of it..?)
- Janice Y.K. Lee, 'The Expatriates' (I enjoyed reading this, but am unsure how it will look as a film/TV show..?)
- Meg Wolitzer, 'The Female Persuasion' (Enjoyed more than what I thought I would, but it plays out more like a TV drama, there really is no big climax in this or anything..but can TOTALLY picture Nicole as the famous feminist character!)
Books that have been made into films/TV that I started but couldn't finish:
- Philip Pullman, 'The Golden Compass' (it just wasn't as interesting for me as the film was)
- Donna Tartt, 'The Goldfinch' (DRY. So, so dry.)
Books I have not yet read:
- Charles Frazier, 'Cold Mountain'
- Eric Lomax, 'The Railway Man'
- Saroo Brierley, 'Lion'
- Thomas Cullinan, 'The Beguiled'
- Garrad Conley, 'Boy Erased'
I seem to avoid the bios, haha. I'm more of a fiction person..
Would love to hear about the ones you've read, and what you've thought of them!

That book series is one of my favourites, with the second book being the best one. Such a shame it never got made, because Nicole had such a juicy role in it, and she was sublime casting as Marissa Coulter!

I absolutely loved 'The Family Fang'. It was just such a good mix of dark comedy and dysfunctional family drama - my favorite genre. 'The Hours' was a sublime read and how gorgeously adapted for the screen. 'Big Little Lies', I just breezed through; light and easy.I have to say, I enjoyed reading 'Truly Madly Guilty' immensely. 'Nine Perfect Strangers', it felt like, is written to be a TV series: choppy but fun. I liked 'The Silent Wife' a tad bit more than 'Before I Go To Sleep' although both were strictly so-so. While 'The Female Persuasion' was not the most comfortable/fuzzy read, it had a strong female gaze and I 100% agree with you Curdey, it'd make a good limited TV series - may be even just 3 episodes. 'Cold Mountain' I read before the movie came out; it was slow but hypnotically good. I loved 'The Human Stain' actually and was mortified how poorly it was adapted. 'In The Cut' was thrillingly provocative. I adored 'How to Talk to Girls at Parties'; the comic book version of the short story was quite elegantly done. I started reading 'Max Perkins: Editor of Genius' and left it halfway through (and conveniently forgot/lost/left it in the train).
'The Golden Compass'. Sigh. I think the trilogy is probably one of my favorite books of all times. So immersive. Thought-provoking. Controversial. Work of pure genius, weaving together the turmoils of puberty, history, quantum physics, theology, cosmology. So grand in its scale.
I'm struggling through 'The Expatriates' right now and I just can't make myself like it much. Once 'The Dig' is confirmed, that'd be up next for me.

I absolutely loved his dark materials!
I thought the hours the movie was better than the book.
Before I go to sleep was a quick dull read, I thought Kidman could bring it to life but I was wrong.
Silent wife was trashy and interesting to begin with but as you mentioned ran out of steam.
Reconstructing Amelia was boring, lol and I'm glad plans fell through.
Queen of the desert ( I bought one of the books) , was research based and I actually found it very interesting, I really thought Gertrude bell was a covert ops spy. Unfortunately Herzog wanted to focus on the romance and how the men motivated and defined bell which was contrary to the spirit of the woman.
Let's see what else
Oh enjoyed little bee, was disappointed she lost the rights to this book.
The family fang was a great read and I loved the book more than the film.
I even bought batman forever the book when I was younger just because it had pic of Kidman.
Been slacking lately
Gave the goldfinch a whirl and it's been putting me to sleep.

I was going to try and read some of her upcoming books, but I recently started University (as a mature student) and I just cant face reading anything else. Even for fun. I think the last thing I read that Nicole starred in was probably "Big Little Lies", which I really liked. Anybody familiar with the Belgariad book series? Always thought Nicole would make a great Aunt Pol. I heard rumours that it might get a television treatment, could be a great show!

Trying to remember the ones I've read.. I'll rank them from which one I liked best to least, for fun.
Big Little Lies: Love this book so much. I think I love the series even more though. Boy Erased: I like the book quite a bit more than the film. There was so much more detail and so many more scenes on Garrard's relationship with his mother in the book than in the film. The Expatriates: I started reading this and got about a quarter of the way through the first time. But when I picked it up again a few months later, I think when you get to a certain point in the story where you see how the women connect to each other, it gets a lot better. I'm looking forward to this as a series. The Goldfinch: It's long af lol but I was really engaged by the story. I'm concerned about the film, because as I read it and finished, I couldn't stop wondering how the hell this would all fit into a movie. I'm curious what they will have had to cut. But the trailer looks beautiful, so I hope it will surprise me. The Female Persuasion: Really interesting and timely. The characters are interesting, though I've mentioned before, it's a very "white feminist" story, so I would hope they would be aware in how to adapt and change it in making a film to be more inclusive (maybe with the casting of the character of Zee, for example). The Family Fang: This book was really charming and funny. I just rewatched the film again recently and I wish it had been better. It was always going to be hard to adapt though because the child versions of Annie and Buster were so much more prominent in the book. Nine Perfect Strangers: Fun story with a huge ensemble of characters. I wish the reader had the chance to get to know the characters even more, but there were too many of them to get to know that well. It could be a fun adaptation though, I'm really curious. You Should Have Known (The Undoing): Fun thriller. Not the most clever or inventive story, but entertaining enough. It seems like they've made some changes from the book in the adaptation. It could be a really thrilling series. The Dig: Nice story, but the characters weren't very compelling to me. The book is more about the plot than the characters. Before I Go to Sleep: Enjoyable read, one of those thrillers that you can read quickly. I kind of liked the film too. It's a standard thriller, but entertaining. The Last Anniversary: This one took a while to get going for me. The whole overarching mystery/plot aspect was kind of silly for me in the end. Truly Madly Guilty: I didn't like this one. I found it soooo tedious. With BLL, we knew someone died and there was mystery leading up to it of who did it and who died, but in this one, I wanted to pull my hair out when Liane teased that ~something bad happened with these three couples on almost every page. It was really annoying to me, and the payoff of what the bad thing was wasn't even interesting to me in the end. I hope this one never gets adapted.
The Silent Wife: For some reason I can't even remember it very much, it has been a while though.

The timing of this thread!
Looks like Nicole has acquired even more books that I at least wasn't aware of yet:
Rise by Cara Brookins Mice by Gordon Reece
and Reconstructing Amelia and The Silent Wife are still on the table I guess.
