I wonder how they're going to pull this off, to be honest. I read the book, and the stories in it are SO short and VERY paper-thin in terms of profundity, there's not much to flesh out in them apart from some clumsy/reductive/cliche metaphors. They're going to have to get (a) great screenwriter/s to make this something special, in my opinion.. Is it sci-fi? That genre is easy to adapt / let your imagination wander.

No, I wouldn't say sci-fi - it's literally just like metaphors about womanhood. Example, I remember one of them was a story about how in a marriage a woman was put on a 'shelf' (like a trophy - get where I'm going here...) and she was taken off the shelf just to be paraded around and then was put back on the shelf and forgotten about. Like that was the story, and so many of the others were similar. Another one was about a bunch of women literally being put into "pigeonholes". The author just took sayings etc. and made them literal. :/

A thought it would be more like Love, Death and Robots.

I think this is really cool! Like you said, it needs a good script and a capable director and we could have something fun and weird, it's only half an hour episode each. Hopefully Nicole's episode is risky and controversial. It's like her indie films, but on TV 😁😁

It's just great having her be lead in a 30 minute piece of content for Apple. And I hope her episode is directed by a big name like Jane Campion or Sofia Coppola.

I am quite apprehensive about it, but a lot of full length movies have come out of conceptual short stories. The better of them being like Arrival, The invisible Man, even EWS on some level, and the more mediocre of them being like HTTGAP and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This heavily depends on the screenwriter. I think there's definitely the freedom to go crazy with each story, play it more surreal and less tongue-in-cheek. There's not a ton of female sci-fi/fantasy directors out there, but I think it'd be so interesting if Chloe Zhao ended up directing one (highly unlikely given that she's probably in high demand). I'm intrigued to see where this goes, but I'm not getting my hopes up quite yet.

I personally would like to see a film version of the play, Cuddles. It is a brilliant play, very dark and twisted, and something I feel she would really excel in. Any place I can read it? Love the concept Zazz, Keep checking amazon. I managed to get a copy years and years ago when the play came out off-broadway. It is darker than the synopsis I've read on this thread.

i think it's all about the screenwriter and the director since according to what you guys are saying the source material ain't so good.

Well if its anythings like a sci version "if these walls could talk" I'm game, furthermore, im sure she is going to get an interesting or perhaps a number of interesting directors to helm the anthology.

It’s not really a sci-fi at all though, guys.. I don’t know where this sci-fi label got attached to this? Is it listed as sci-fi on IMDb or something?

Just had a look and it’s not in the press release. The press release just says they’ll be “genre-bending” which does sound about right. They’ll be quirky, but as far as the book goes, definitely not sci-fi..!

It's not sci fi. I would call it sly and whimsical and outlandish: basically a blend of magical realism and social insight.
For example, in one short story, a woman resolves to return and exchange her boring husband at the store where she originally acquired him. Other chapters like: The Woman Who Grew Wings (yup, actual wings). The Woman Who Slowly Disappeared. The Woman Who Had a Strong Suit. The Woman Who Wore Her Heart on Her Sleeve (yup, a woman had an actual heart transplanted on her wrist, visible to all etc)
It's a very curious universe.
