www.indiewire.com/2018/12/holiday-oscar-prospects-ranked-from-vice-to-destroyer-1202029757/Holiday Oscar Movies Ranked, from ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ to ‘Destroyer’ “Destroyer” (Annapurna, December 25) Metacritic: 63. Strengths: This taut thriller from Karyn Kusama is a hardboiled noir (written by Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi) designed to showcase the range of movie star Nicole Kidman. She has earned raves for her layered lead role as a veteran LA cop — athletic, tough, vulnerable, damaged. She is driven to revisit the sins of her past, which could impact her ex-husband (Scoot McNairy) and angry teenage daughter (Jade Pettyjohn). It’s hard to imagine anyone delivering a better performance than Kidman (as both the younger and older versions of the character), or anyone other than a woman director reaching for the mother-daughter dimension of this drama, which makes it sing. Accolades: Critics groups and the Academy tend to overlook genre films, much less those directed by women. Kidman landed a nod from her peeps at the Golden Globes, but not the SAG Awards. Oscar nominations: Kidman is a long shot for Actress — if enough actors branch members catch up with the screener. Weaknesses: Enjoyable as “Destroyer” is, it faced a mixed reception at fall festivals. The movie should play well on the arthouse circuit, but beyond that it looks tough. Kidman and her extraordinary makeup is the movie’s ace in the hole.

Curdey! no sad faces! we should be VERY proud and happy of our Nicole!
if she gets ignored oh well ... she was ignored for some of her very best performances: Birth, To Die For, Eyes Wide Shut, Portrait of a Lady, Dogville, Paperboy..... These ignored performances i love every time i revisit. If Destroyer's is that good. i'm more than happy! i just can't believe that Australia is releasing it end of March, when it's out everywhere else!
By the way Melbourne had a special screening on 11/12/2018, i found out about just yesterday! i almost cried! lol

Destroyer finally certified fresh on Rotten tomatoes, I bet they were piling up negative reviews hoping against hope to bring down its rating but gave up.

Review from the movieisle.com.
The film sinks or swims on the back of Nicole Kidman, and she delivers a powerhouse of a performance. In the past, I always found Kidman’s work to be emotionally distant, a bit frosty and off-putting. I rarely saw into the depths of her character. Something about her work kept the audience at arm’s length. It always felt like I was watching a performance.
Her work in Destroyer, on the other hand, is a master class in nuance. She avoids the “bigness” that is often inherent in roles like this, allowing her eyes to convey more than any words on a page ever could. But when her fury rises to the surface, she is as fearsome as any of her male counterparts (just ask the sleazy accountant played by Bradley Whitford).
And that’s where Destroyer breaks new ground. We’ve seen the drunken rogue cop cliche played out by male actor after male actor until that vein has been strip-mined of all originality. Yet that overdone trope springs to life in the hands of a female protagonist. It’s an incredible rush to see a male uniform cop hanging back warily asking Bell for direction and seeing her stare down the barrel of an assault rifle when she tells him, “It’s gonna be a gunfight.” She’s an unflappable female Wyatt Earp headed into the OK Corral without a moment of hesitation, and Destroyer plays like its equal parts western and L.A. noir.

I love that Kusama has steadfastly refused to categorise herself as a female film maker. She doesn't want to be pigeonholed or be held up as a victim /martyr.
She's a director who happens to be a woman and she's not going to let industry tropes dictate to her what she should and shouldn't do, she's going to make the films she wants to do.
I'm so glad Kidman got to work with her and is helping shed some more light on Kusama just like Kusama is helping shed light on a different aspect of Kidman's talent.

Tweet from Edgar Wright, director of Spaced and Baby Driver!!!
Go see Karyn Kusama’s hard boiled gem this week for some festive grit. Saw this at LFF and one particular scene fooled me in the most beautiful way.
